1979 Chevy Corvette Restoration

June 11, 2018

So, I finally went back to working on the Vette.  It’s been super busy, but, a few big changes.  Katie’s brother Jason bought a house a town over with a 2 car garage.  That’s the new home for her for a bit.  Last update, I had the front brakes done.  I did one rear wheel this past weekend and was missing bolts for the final wheel.  Gonna finish the calipers this week, gravity bleed the lines and hopefully, the brakes will be done.  I also ordered a new fuel sending unit and should have that in shortly.  If all goes well, she should be drivable before July.  Then, I gotta get new tires.  Oh, yea, I also got the t-tops off.  The mechanism is rusty as hell.

The past few weekends have sucked ass.  Constant rain.  In other words, nothing done lately.  I do have everything I need to get the baby road worthy.   Weather calls for rain this weekend so prolly nothing to update anytime soon.  🙁

I finally got to work on the car today.  It’s been raining non-stop.  To sum up,  the front brakes are done.  One of the rear is 95% done.  The rears are a real pain in the ass.  The parking brakes are drum.  I HATE drum brakes.

I decided to take the day off from the vette.  Body is sore.  Will continue during the week after work.

I didn’t get as much done as I hoped, but we’ll see what I can get done today.  (Supposed to rain)  Both front wheels have new calipers, brake pads and rotors.  Just a note: I’ve done MANY brake jobs on MANY different kinds of car.  This vette is, by far, the biggest pan in the ass.  The new master cylinder is bled and half in.  I’m not hooking in the lines until all the calipers are in.  The rear brakes, also a pain in the ass, are disassembled.  As I was pulling the calipers, I broke a line.  Another fucked up thing, the rear brake lines are NOT rubber.  It goes from hard line to rubber line, back to a hard line, which I broke.  Also, need to adjust or replace the parking brake.  They are stuck and it took two of us to get the rear rotors off.  Friday, I registered the girl and she’s been insured for 2 weeks so as soon as I get these brakes done and completely bled,  its around the neighborhood for her debut ride- this coming weekend.  -cross fingers-

It was nice this morning so I wanted to get a jump on the brake system.  After googling around, replacing this brake booster is going to SUCK!!  Anyway, the master cylinder is off.  It was empty btw.   So, to replace the booster,  I had to pull the drivers seat out, lay on my back, head under the dash.   I gave a quick peek and hopefully, I can get Nikki over here.  She may be able to get her hands in there for the 2 pain-in-the-ass nuts.

I got a lot done this weekend.  The big one,  SHE RUNS!!!  New carb got here but the vacuum nipple from the hot air choke was broken off.  I grabbed the one off the old carb, since its only the housing, and she started right up.  Ran her for 30 minute clips 5 -6 times Saturday and Sunday.  Timed her 6 before and now she purrs.  I ordered the brake pads, rotors, crossover hood release cable and windows regulator with motor for the passenger side.  I can open both doors with one hand now (WD-40 rocks).  Hoping to be able to run around the block by this coming weekend.

I spoke to my Uncle, David, who works on boats and knows the quadrajet carbs.  Considering the symptoms, he said its def the carburetor.  Basically, when it heats up, the choke opens and the carb is starved for gas.  I found a rebuilt carb, shipped, with a lifetime warrantee, free core shipping back, for $220 total.  <— awesome price.  https://www.guaranteedcarburetors.com.  Will be here Friday…  To be continued…

Well,  radiator hoses – done.  Flushed engine – done.  Thermostat – replaced.  Still not idling when she gets hot.  The choke opens and she stalls.  I think I need a professionally rebuilt carb.  Checking prices for replacement or rebuilding the one I have.

The wife is away for the weekend and I’ve been working on the Vette All weekend.  Gas line is changed, plugs are done, rotor and cap are in.  The lower radiator hose is done.  I’m HOPING to finish the upper radiator hose and the thermostat done tomorrow.  Also hoping I can get a good idle to properly time her.

I started replacing the plugs yesterday.  What a pain in the ass.  Got 3 out of 8 so far.  It’s been too damn cold.  Hopefully, I’ll get the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and the gas line done this weekend.

I pulled the carb off the other day for todays rebuild.  Also pulled the valve covers.  The rockers look good.  Niki and I rebuild the carb, put in back in the car with the valve covers.  Still not right.  Have to time this bitch.

Ran a bunch of errands for the girl.  Needed a timing light, plugs, valve cover gasket, etc.  Pulled the valve covers.  They are in shit shape.  The chrome is flaking like a SOB.   I’ll use the old ones to set the rocker arms.   Basically, cut a long hole and use it to adjust the rocker arms while the engine is running so I don’t get oil everywhere.  The cover came last night.  Here she is all tucked in for the night.

I had her running this morning.  Def a carburetor issue.  I pulled out the carb and Saturday, my sis-inlaw  (My wife’s brother’s wife)  Nikki is coming over to help me rebuild it.  She’s almost as excited as me to work on this.  Here’s the Rochester 4BBL 4006A carb.

Changed the oil and charged the battery.  With a little ether, baby started.  She was a bit rough and running REAL rich.  Gonna do the plugs and rebuild the carb this weekend.

Went to Danny’s Garage to look at the new baby.  She looks good.  The body is in great shape.  She’s runs but has a faint tap.  I’m hoping its just low on oil or a loose lifter.  Also, the interior, needs a complete over haul.
